Harbinger of the Post-truth World

The Trump presidency was as funny as it was frustrating, but what is scary is the extent of popularity that it enjoys despite its obviously immoral ways.

The results of any US election does always have far reaching consequences beyond the US borders. Nonetheless, the recent Trump-Biden contest was more significant than any previous ones. This was particularly because Trump has been openly exhibiting Sociopathic behaviour - a psychological condition that makes people inconsiderate to the feelings of fellow beings, promotes impulsive decision making, and prompts one to play free of established rules and structures for personal gains.

Over the 4 years in office, Trump been openly disrespectful of anybody who doesn't flatter him and has had little remorse for indulging in proven immoral acts. He literally has no diplomatic filter while expressing himself in public and his inconsistencies in international affairs has been a pain for nations to recalibrate to. Above all, Trump has with his eccentric nature, proven strongly that he does not have the temperament to be commander-in-chief of the world's largest military that also has the largest nuclear stockpile.

All the above notwithstanding, Trump surprisingly still commands a strong fan base and is likely to continue being popular even after the presidency. Notably, support for his narcissistic tendencies and conspiracy mongering extends even outside the US. While technology has ensured a seamless information flow, it seems like objective facts are now less influential in shaping public opinion than ever before. I do hope that the Trump phenomenon is just an anomaly, but the fear that it is actually the new normal in the 'post-truth' times that we currently live in is very real.
