The Conspiracies that weren't

The attack on Capitol Hill has some striking similarities to the Babri Masjid demolition.

Babri Masjid Demolition & The Capitol Hill Attack

When the U.S. lawmakers had gathered to certify the election of Joe Biden as the 46th U.S. president, a huge mob of Trump supporters thronged into the premises of the Capitol Hill, which is the seat of the American legislature. Overwhelming the security personals by sheer numbers, they gained entry into almost all quarters of building, damaged furniture and even used irritant gas to dissuade the house in session from certifying the Biden win.

The Mob Siege

Their siege and attack which started early on the 6th of January after Donald Trump's inciting speech asking his supporters to fight till the end, lasted till late in the evening. Amid widespread condemnation against the happenings as an attempted coup, Trump appealed to his supporters to maintain peace and go home, but simultaneously cheered them with words that stopped slightly shy of an open support. Trump's team now claims that the attack on Capitol Hill was not a pre-meditated conspiracy, but a protest against the election result that spiraled out of control.

BJP's Rath Yatra of the 1990s

In the early 90s in India, L.K.Advani was leading a high decibel polarizing campaign, calling for the demolition of Babri Masjid, and construction of a Ram Mandir in its place. Early on the 6th of December 1992, the radical proponents of the Ram Mandir movement including Mr. Advani had scheduled events in Ayodhya, which saw inciting speeches. Eventually, when a mob (that is apparently unidentifiable) took down the structure, it was labelled as an act that was committed by some in the spur of the moment, stressing that there was never a conspiracy to take it down through illegal means. Till date, despite being blatantly obvious, nobody has been convicted for having illegally demolished the Masjid.
